Windermere Guest Houses

Windermere is home to the largest natural lake in England stretching out over 18 kilometres in length and 219 feet in depth and lies in the beautiful valleys of the Lake District in Cumbria. This has been a popular destination for tourists since the construction of the Kendal and Windermere Railway finished in 1847. Travellers can expect to find the finest Windermere guest houses accommodation in an area surrounded in natural beauty and mystery. This lake has definitely stood the test of time as it was formed over 13,000 years ago during the last major ice age. Tourists are invited into this serene and tranquil place to explore everything the lake has to offer and relax in an area which can easily be described as heavenly.

The lake was formed from two glaciers one from the nearby Troutbeck valley and the other from the Fairfield Horseshoe, these both melted filling the lake with meltwater, today the lake is fed by other smaller lakes including Brathay, Rothay, Trout Beck and Cunsey Beck. These rivers supply the lake with rich nutrients making the lake rich in fish and bird life.

In waters this ancient one would expect to hear about mythical creatures such as the Loch Ness monster, Windermere has its own creature. Lecturer Steve Burnip and his wife Eileen spotted the giant eel-like creature in 2006, but sightings date back to the 1950s. So why not cruise around the lake in search of the eel upon one of the many morning, lunch and sunset cruises where drinks and food will be served, truly a fantastic way to investigate something a little prehistoric. A firm favourite with all tourists is the Jazz Buffet Cruise, which departs into the setting sun, truly a superb way to relax and reflect upon the day's activities.

The gentle slopes that surround the lake can easily be discovered through the many walking trails all carefully marked out and are easily conquered by all ramblers, experienced or not. These paths start on the door step of your Windermere guest house of which each will advise you of the best route to take. These guest houses all show off stunning views of the calm lake mirroring the colourful vegetation skirting the water, or the inclined hills shaped by the rising or setting sun; all of this from your own private room window.
